Unpacking Impact: Five Years In - What's Fad and What's Fab?
Transparency, social justice, funder behavior, and defining the proper role of private philanthropy all characterize the current playing field in the growing and ever more important philanthropy sector. Funders want their dollars to achieve "impact”, the government seeks partners to achieve entrepreneurial change, the public wants to know what really happens behind those closed foundation doors, and the entire social sector needs to have confidence in the accountability for the billions of dollars our sector disseminates each year. The entire system depends on the alignment between law, ethics, and best practices. Sadly, that alignment is often elusive. Some don’t know the law, some don’t know the ethics, and there is no unanimity of best practices, and all too often the different kinds of professional advisors: wealth advisors, trust attorneys, philanthropy advisors operate in separate spheres, and under different rules. No wonder clients are often at a loss.
