Unconscious Bias: We have Met the Enemy and the Enemy Is Us

This kickoff to the AIP series on “unconscious bias” will explore our own, often well intentioned, use of power, status, and role in philanthropic behaviors. Unconscious biases and behaviors, and our unarticulated assumptions need to be understood even before exploring specific racial, gender, or ethnic challenges or else our responses will end up being tokenistic and patronizing. This fully interactive session will allow us to explore our “conscious use of self” in our relationship to organizational behavior and grantee interactions – as a precondition to deeper dives into the more substantive unconscious biases that will be explored in subsequent sessions.
