All advisors want their client's charitable plans to succeed. But given the inherent complexity of many charitable plans, it is easy for something to go awry. This presentation will identify common areas that may receive inadequate attention or be overlooked in the design and implementation of a client's charitable plan including:

• Proper transfer of ownership
• Proper identification of the parties at closing
• Ensuring no inappropriate fees are paid at closing
• Ensuring illustrations adequately account for the financial realities of the plan
• Ensuring the selected terms result in a qualified CRT
• Ensuring written agreements provide appropriate flexibility
• Avoiding common sources of unrelated business taxable income
• Identifying when it’s too late and other assignment of income issues
• Properly integrating CRTs and Wealth Replacement Trusts
• Avoiding acts of self-dealing
• Properly setting up trust investment accounts

Ted and his colleagues are routinely consulted by attorneys, CPAs, planned giving officers, and financial service professionals that look to Renaissance for case assistance. A frequent speaker, Ted has spoken to numerous groups regarding charitable planning including the National Conference on Planned Giving, the Advisors in Philanthropy Conference on Philanthropy, broker dealer conferences, estate planning councils and planned giving councils in various states, producer groups, and advanced markets study groups. Ted as also been published in a number of professional publications including The Tax Advisor, Leimberg Information Services Charitable Giving e-newsletter, and the Planned Giving Design Center ( Ted is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Indiana CPA Society. He is a graduate of the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law (J.D., summa cum laude), the Indiana University Kelley School of Business (MBA in Accounting), and Asbury University (B.A. in Computer Science).
