Integrating Corporate Social Responsibility with Philanthropic Advising to Maximize Community Impact: Aligning Values and Passions with Time and Money

Molly Norton, Brighton Jones

At Brighton Jones, we've always been philanthropically minded, but in the last year we've started thinking more strategically about how we can integrate and leverage our internal corporate activities with the causes our clients care about. How can we come together as a larger community: our firm, our employees, our clients, and local and global nonprofits that we engage with, to share information, give collaboratively, and introduce each other to the best organizations that make our communities stronger? What can we do as a firm to align our clients, and our own, passions and values with time and money. We approach this through three initiatives: 1. 1% for Compassion which gives away 1% of our revenues to charitable causes. 2. Compassion in Action which promotes channels for getting our employees and clients out into the community together. 3. The Richer Life Foundation which introduces clients and employees to global issues through awareness trips to Kenya and other places, and takes clients to visit local nonprofits. One year into these initiatives, we are seeing more engagement from employees and clients, increased client appreciation and outreach, and hopefully, more impact.

Attendees will learn:

  1. What elements create a strong corporate philanthropy/CSR program.
  2. How to integrate these with our clients's philanthropic goals.
  3. How can we think beyond our local communities and structure giving to greater impact.
