Moving from Headlines to Philanthropy - Making Sense of Europe’s Current Events

European affairs have dominated headlines the past ten years with stories of economic discord, political uncertainty, and humanitarian crises not seen in a generation.  In this session, we will review the current state of affairs on the European continent and how they have affected the philanthropic landscape.  We will discuss how you can work with your clients to identify and address these societal challenges while meeting their philanthropic goals.




Ellena E. Fotinatos, King Baudouin Foundation United States

Ellena is the Deputy Director of Donor and Nonprofit Services at the King Baudouin Foundation United States, an organization which enables US donors to support European and African Nonprofit initiatives.  In addition to serving as head of operations, Ellena manages donor relationships as well as the European network of grantees.  Serving as a leader in strategic planning, she has been instrumental in the growth of the foundation which includes making over $58.4 million in grants from 2015-2017.

Before joining KBFUS in 2012, Ellena worked at the Center for Energy, Marine Transportation and Public Policy at Columbia University where she served as a project manager for high level events and publications, in addition to pursuing her own research and writing.

Ellena completed her master’s degree in international affairs at the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University where she focused on European affairs and international security policy.


Fabian Suwanprateep, Wider Sense

Fabian is manager at Wider Sense and advises a wide range of different clients in their CSR, philanthropic and social investing activities. In his consulting work, Fabian works primarily with corporate and corporate foundation clients in retail, commerce, consumer goods, technology and financial services. Fabian has developed corporate philanthropy and social innovation strategies from scratch, systematically matching clients’ objectives with societal needs. Fabian wrote a number of articles, blogs and publications on venture philanthropy, impact investing and corporate responsibility. Further, Fabian co-founded the Impact Investing Roundtable in Berlin, a network of over 100 individuals interested in the impact investing space and he currently serves as a member in the expert group on strategic alignment of European Venture Philanthropy Association (EVPA).

Prior to Wider Sense, Fabian worked with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, managing the Business for Development project in South East Asia to improve the access for SMEs to international markets.

Fabian holds a dual Master Degree in International Affairs and Public Policy from the School of International and Public Affairs, Columbia University and the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, National University of Singapore, respectively.
