What Was and What Will Be "Clients in Transition" A Case Study

As an advisor, you want client retention, a steady stream of referrals, growth. Are you doing all you can with your current clients to achieve that end? More importantly, are you paying attention to all of the players at the table? Are you able to navigate your clients’ lives when things get messy? Once married to an ultra-wealthy man, my experience as a financial client and as a donor changed dramatically upon my divorce. I can tell you precisely what it feels like to be ignored by financial advisors, what that oversight cost them. As someone who has raised millions for nonprofits, I can tell you precisely how it feels to be asked for money and to be the one asking, how to do it right so you can fund world-changing projects with ease. A case study in how to adapt with your clients, incorporating stories and perspectives from my clients who have been dealing with transition in their lives.

Emily started Emily Scott AND when she personally experienced the need for professionals to help with her emotional side of money during a life transition.  Her earlier professional career includes years on Wall Street, the retail industry, and marketing consulting.  Since 1997, she has focused her time and energy on philanthropy and non-profit boards. Emily was a founding board director of the Park City Community Foundation and served as Vice Chair and Grants Chair. She has been on many non-profit boards including the Simmons College Board of Trustees (where she held numerous Chair/Executive Committee positions), V-Day, SF AIDS Foundation, KQED, and Fostering Media Connections.  Emily was a principal in the California College Pathways Collaborative. She chaired her family’s foundation for 15 years. Currently, Emily serves on the advisory committees of Target Zero, and Cynthia’s Sisters.   Her 25 years of personal experience in philanthropy and managing a family office, Emily fully appreciates the nuances and pressures that having a high net worth can bring.

In addition to being a board member and grantor, Emily has been actively engaged in her philanthropy.  She believes in the value of incorporating her time, treasure, and talent in all that she does.  Her partial list of accomplishments includes raising large sums of money by participating in the SF/LA AIDS RIDE, writing a book, walking the Camino de Santiago, journeying to the Democratic Republic of Congo to raise money for City of Joy, and volunteering in the refugee camps in Lesvos and Athens. She is a passionate advocate of humanitarian endeavors, civil discourse, and is actively engaged in the pursuit of truth and reconciliation as the acknowledgment of the racial injustice in the U.S.A. Emily presented at TEDx Sonoma on philanthropy and authored Tails of Devotion, A Look at the Bond between People and Their Pets. Ms. Scott has advised on and taught grant making, development, and board governance.

She is a member of AiP (Advisors in Philanthropy), and PPI (Purposeful Planning Institute), and is training to be a certified Financial Transitionist.  Emily holds an MBA from Cornell University, a BA in management from Simmons College, and is an alumna of The Philanthropy Workshop.
