About the program...

Please join us for lunch and an engaging conversation with Julie Burns President and CEO of Rize Massachusetts, Arden O’Connor CEO of the O’Connor Professional Group, Jim Derick, Co-founder and Director of Safe Coalition and moderated by Carolyn Shaughnessy, Donor Engagement Officer at the Social Innovation Forum. 

We plan to discuss the human and economic impact of the opioid epidemic in Massachusetts, hear from experts about novel and innovative approaches to solving the epidemic and learn how private philanthropy can help. We expect attendees will walk away with a better understanding of the issue, insight into how philanthropists can help make a difference, and some guidance about where to best invest resources.

About the speakers...


Julie Burns, President and CEO, Rize Masschusetts 

Julie came to RIZE Massachusetts in August 2017 from the Blue Cross Blue Shield Foundation of Massachusetts where she was a senior director with responsibility for communication strategy, strategic planning, and administration. She was promoted to president & CEO of the RIZE Massachusetts Foundation in 2019, an independent nonprofit organization dedicated to working to end the opioid epidemic in Massachusetts and reduce its devastating impact on people, communities, and our economy. Prior to joining BCBSMA in September 2010, Ms. Burns worked for Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino in various roles, including deputy chief of staff, director of the Office of Arts, Tourism, and Special Events, president of the Fund for Boston Neighborhoods, and executive director of Boston 2004, Inc., the not-for-profit, non-partisan corporation created to organize Boston’s preparations for the Democratic National Convention. Her other professional experience includes positions in government affairs practice at the law firm of Holland & Knight, the Dewey Square Group, a grassroots and communications consulting firm, and the United States Senate in the office of Senator Charles S. Robb (D-VA).She was a member of Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh’s Office of Recovery Services Substance Use Prevention advisory board and has served her community on several nonprofit boards and commissions. Ms. Burns currently serves on the steering committee of the John F. Kennedy Library New Frontier Network and the board of advisors of Boston Harbor Now.She received her bachelor of arts in political science from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia, has a graduate certificate in public relations from Emerson College, and has completed senior executive programs at Babson University, Bentley University, and the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.

   

Jim Derick, Co-founder and Director, Safe Coalition

Jim is the co-founder of SAFE Coalition, Inc. SAFE is a regional coalition of community partners in Western Norfolk County who have come together to provide a pathway for support, education and treatment options for substance use disorder. Jim is a parent who knows the first hand the devastating impact of Substance Use Disorder. In 2015, his son nearly lost his life to this disease. Jim began to speak publicly about his families’ experience with the hope that others may be encouraged to step forward and seek help. In addition to his role with SAFE Jim serves on the Franklin Public Schools Substance Abuse Task Force, is a meeting facilitator for Learn to Cope and a Family/Parent Care partner with Caron Treatment Centers.

   

Arden O’Connor, CEO, O’Connor Professional Group

Arden founded the O’Connor Professional Group to address the needs of families and individuals struggling with an array of behavioral health issues, including addiction, mental health disorders, eating disorders, learning, and other developmental challenges. With several relatives in recovery, Arden is passionate about helping families and individuals navigate the highly fragmented treatment system in a way that creates positive outcomes and allows families to heal. Arden is a graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Business School. She remains heavily involved in community activities, as a board member of Winsor School Corporation, Collaboration for Family Flourishing, Massachusetts Association of Mental Health, Attorneys for Family Held Enterprises, and C4 Recovery Solutions. Previously, she served as a board member for the Justice Resource Institute (former chair), Harvard Club of Boston, Victory Programs, and Harvard Business School Alumni Association of Boston. She maintains professional affiliations with the following organizations: Boston Estate Planning Council, Worthy Circles and Family Firm Institute.
