Member Spotlight

I wanted to tell you about one of our current projects because it is a great opportunity for you to rally new support for organizations you care about while learning from the collective wisdom of a huge base of philanthropic investors.

Arabella Advisors helps its clients approach their philanthropy like they would financial investments. As we team up with The Motley Fool to help its 10th annual Foolanthropy campaign, we're pleased to find that more than five million Fools agree with our approach.

Run by the Virginia-based Motley Fool- a multimedia financial education company offering advice ranging from picking individual stocks to building a retirement portfolio- Foolanthropy echoes the company’s mission to educate, amuse, and enrich the public. Foolanthropy involves the five million members of the Motley Fool community (affectionately known as Fools) by creating a platform in which philanthropic investors can learn about and support some of the most effective nonprofit organizations in the world.

For an organization to receive funding, it must first be nominated by a member on Foolanthropy’s free online message board. From this pool, five finalists are selected and featured on the Motley Fool website. Members then have a month to contribute to their favorite organization, and the company provides a $10,000 bonus to the organization receiving the most support.

At the same time, The Motley Fool runs its My 2 Cents campaign in which every single post to any of its boards in the month of December generates two cents for the Foolanthropy pot. At the end of the month, the sum is equally divided amongst the remaining four finalists. In 2005, Foolanthropy channeled almost $300,000 to five worthy organizations.

The process mirrors one of The Motley Fool’s most innovative products, CAPS, which rewards community wisdom related to the stock market. In fact, members have a history of strong picks as Nobel Prize recipient Grameen Bank has been a finalist five times over the last ten years.

Arabella Advisors is pleased to have the opportunity to help Foolanthropy continue its excellent track record. We’ll be guiding the Motley Fool through the process of applying the same rigor and diligence to philanthropy as it does to finance while providing expert commentary on the Foolanthropy message board. If you’re interested in supporting an organization vetted by more than five million Fools or you'd like to nominate an organization of your own, please visit www.foolanthropy.com and make your most Foolish pitch.
