2018 Fithian Leadership Award

Named after the late Scott Fithian, one of the founding members and leaders of this organization whose passion for philanthropic advising continues to be highly recognized, the International Association of Advisors in Philanthropy (AiP) recognizes annually an individual with a distinguished career in service to the philanthropic community. 

Scott Fithian is widely considered a pioneer through his innovative and ground-breaking work in the area of values-based financial and legacy planning. He was founder of The Legacy Companies, Boston and his methodology continues to inspire advisors and their clients to approach their planning in a more meaningful way. 

Fithian Award honorees are chosen for their efforts to uphold the standards of excellence in ethics, service and charitable planning encouraged by the Association. Specifically, the Fithian Award recipients have elevated the profession of philanthropic planning beyond their own practice. 


The 2018 Fithian Award goes to Jerry Nuerge, CAP®, CLU®, ChFC®, CFWC, RIA

Jerry is cofounder of the Center for Family Conversations, and owner of the Financial Independence Group and has a rich background in Family Coaching and financial planning.  He is also the creator of the Wealth Integration and Transfer System™, the Generation Connection Process™, as well as the Revenue Retrieval System™.  Jerry holds a BBA and MBA degree, holds the Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy (CAP), is a Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU), a Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC), a Certified Family Wealth Counselor (CFWC), and a Registered Investment Advisor (RIA).  He is a lifetime member of the Million Dollar Round Table (MDRT), and has qualified for its “Top of the Table”.  He also belongs to the National Estate Planning Council, the Society of Financial Service Professionals, the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (NAIFA), and is a past-president of the local chapters of these organizations.

He is a charter member of the International Association of Advisors in Philanthropy (AiP), which networks with members across the nation on visionary planning. Jerry was president of this organization is 2009. He is also a member of Kingdom Advisors (KA), a national group specializing in applying Biblical principles in Legacy planning. In May of 2014 Jerry helped create the Center for Family Conversations which is a resource for families who desire to have INTENTIONAL family conversations that deepen family relationships.

Jerry was the Captain of the Ohio University hockey team and earned a BBA degree, he then went to the University of Toledo for an MBA and while in Toledo bought the minor (IHL) league team and was Co-owner and GM for three years. After selling the hockey team he entered the Financial Services world with Northwestern Mutual and his production became nationally known. He has over $1 Billion of Face Amount issued, with about ½ placed outside NML. In 1985 he formed an independent Registered Investment Advisory firm in IN. He has been a member of the Strategic Coach program for over 25 years.

Jerry has been married to his wife, Sharon, since 1967, has 3 children, and 8 grandchildren, all who live in the Fort Wayne, IN area, a true blessing beyond measure!
